The majority leader’s opinion reflects the House speaker’s previous concerns about the agreement.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana stated over the weekend that the Senate’s recently introduced bipartisan border bill will not be taken up in the lower chamber. The $118 billion package includes aid to Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific, allotting $20 billion to address the U.S. border.
Congressman Scalise stated, “The Senate Border Bill will NOT receive a vote in the House.“ He continued, “Here’s what the people pushing this ‘deal’ aren’t telling you: It accepts 5,000 illegal immigrants a day and gives automatic work permits to asylum recipients—a magnet for more illegal immigration.”
He also said, “If the Senate wants to ultimately start a real negotiation on how to solve the problem, we’re here ready to go. Again, we have a bill that solves the problem. And if they’ve got a better way to do it, let’s have the conversation.“ The congressman added, “This is a major crisis in our nation.“
Senator Mike Lee of Utah has encouraged his party to filibuster the agreement. House Speaker Mike Johnson, also of Louisiana, said that the bill is “even worse than we expected.“
